Property Details

DESCRIPTION

A most impressive large detached house with unique character and charming well presented accommodation featuring a beautiful orangery, open plan kitchen/breakfast room and a breath-taking mature garden with tennis court and river frontage.  Tower House has been extensively modernised by the present owners to an especially high standard whilst being sympathetic to the character of the property.  It is thought that the house began its life in the late 16th Century as a single storey thatched cottage with an upper floor being added, timber floor boards from this period remain in two of the bedrooms.  In the mid 19th Century a builder resided at the property who was responsible for the construction of the Victorian village church and also the demolition in 1868 of part of the medieval church in the village, the Borbach Chantry is the only part remaining today.  Much of the stone from the medieval church was used in the construction of the tower, voice tubes are still in place from the ground floor to the top of the tower. Other reclaimed materials were also incorporated into the Tower House including floor tiles in the main hallway and large stone monuments are featured in the garden, recorded by the Royal Commission of Ancient Monuments.

LOCATION

The property is situated in the rural village of West Dean, a traditional settlement with an excellent community, quietly situated amidst unspoilt downland countryside benefitting from a church, village hall and railway station within a short walk (with regular services to Salisbury, Romsey, Southampton and beyond - excellent for local commuting and for children having access to schooling). The neighbouring village of West Tytherley has a primary school, post office, shop and public house.  Salisbury and Winchester are within easy reach with a comprehensive range of shopping, leisure facilities and excellent educational opportunities. Romsey is within a 20 minute drive and there is also easy access to London, the West Country and the South Coast via the M3, A303 and M27.
